Kenya's First Kite School
EST. 1999

Kitesurfing is our main water sport at Che Shale and we are passionate about it. Justin, the owner of Che Shale, pioneered Kitesurfing in Kenya & East Africa in the early 2000s.

Being the only kite school on the beach means that our spot is uncrowded and on average there will never be more than 15 kiters out. This makes it the perfect place for beginners or those looking to progress in the sport. Our spot is literally at your doorstep so you can roll out of bed and straight onto the board. Experience a one of a kind combination of a vast and uncrowded beach; reliable wind and a variety of kiting conditions from flat water to fun wave riding.

We have two main windy seasons here in Kenya; the Kuzi and Kaskazi.

The Kuzi season runs from June through till end of September blowing from the SE, averaging 15/25knots a day, blowing consistently all day.

The Kaskazi season runs from mid December through til mid April, with the wind coming up after lunch, blowing from the NE averaging 15/20knots.

At Che Shale comfort and safety are paramount! Our staff are here to make your stay memorable and are happy to help in any way; pumping & packing your gear, launch and landing assistance as well as rescue service!

Experienced Riders

Traveling with your own gear? Store your equipment in the school free of charge, and get assistance from our staff with launching, landing and rescue if needed. Experienced riders rush to book their stay during our windiest months (18-25 knots) from July through end of September. In July and August join us for some fun wave riding. We can take our experienced wave riders to a great spot a few kilometres nearby.

Downwinders & Dhow  Trips

Our vast bay is completely protected by the reef, making it perfect for epic downwinders that take you from one end of the bay to the other. We organise downwinders throughout the kiting season and you don't want to miss them.

For a real treat, book a full day on our traditonal East African sailing dhow Sawa Sawa and kite across our bay (Dec - April) or kite the stunning crystal clear waters of Mayungu Sandbar (July - November).
